From Fracture to Form: Finding Wholeness in the Wake of Change

When the familiar structures of my work fractured—consulting contracts paused, speaking engagements postponed, and entire communities grappling with both a pandemic and a long-overdue reckoning with racial and social equity—I was faced with a choice: to see the breaks as permanent, or to find new form in the fragments. I chose to see possibility in the disruption. I began to reimagine how my gifts could meet the moment—how faith, planning, and purpose could be woven into something even more impactful than before.

That season taught me that even in times of disruption, we are still called to serve—though the ways we serve may need to evolve. I came to understand that my intellectual capital, my writing, and my ability to help others build capacity were never confined to a single platform or paycheck. The true value lies in the vision we carry and the courage to act on it.

In response, I leaned fully into innovation. I created virtual workshops and courses to reach and equip wider audiences. I poured my energy into writing, authoring books that distilled my research and experience into actionable insights for advocacy and transformation—including The People’s Plan and Gentrification and Climate Gentrification. I launched a podcast to empower others to share their stories, making knowledge more accessible and elevating voices too often marginalized.

Today, I continue equipping leaders, students, and organizations to reimagine their strategies through sustainable, equity-driven frameworks. I facilitate grant writing mastery workshops that empower communities to secure the resources they need to thrive. And I write, speak, and teach at the intersection of faith, urban planning, social justice, and urban justice—helping others see that even in uncertainty, they can design futures rooted in possibility and dignity.

What once felt like fracture was actually the first step toward a more intentional and meaningful form. My story is a reminder that every disruption holds within it the raw material for transformation—if we are willing to shape it.

“Don’t wait for certainty to act — use what you have, where you are, to reimagine your future. Invest in your vision, embrace new tools, and stay committed to serving others even in times of disruption.”
