| This morning I learned that Rev. Jesse Jackson passed away. And it took me back to 1976. I was 9 years old at Brightwood Elementary School in Washington, DC. My father, Marshall Brown, was proud that Rev. Jackson was visiting our school. Because he knew him personally, he introduced me to him in our cafeteria. My father told me how important he was and said that one day he would be President. But what I remember most has nothing to do with politics. Rev. Jackson shook my hand, looked me directly in the eye, and said, “Brother, you are somebody important. Don’t ever forget it.” I was just a child. But in that moment, I stood taller. Years later, the world would come to know his declaration, “I Am Somebody.” A message rooted in the civil rights movement. A reminder to people who had been marginalized, overlooked, and underestimated that their dignity was not up for debate. He marched alongside Dr. King. He organized. He built institutions. He ran for President and expanded what millions believed was possible. His public legacy is historic. But for me, his legacy is personal. My biggest takeaway is this: The most powerful leaders do not just influence systems. They speak identity into people. Before the speeches. Before the spotlight. Before the slogan was on shirts and bumper stickers. He planted that seed in a 9-year-old boy. And it grew. I am somebody. Not because of a title. Not because of applause. But because I was created with purpose. Thank you, Rev. Jesse Jackson, for speaking life into me when I did not yet understand how much I would need those words. Rest well, sir. |
